from a manual (card) cataloging system to a computerized cataloging system. The computerized cataloging systems provide users with easy to access and up-to-date information about the books available in the library. This ease of access has been accomplished with the advent of local area networks, dialup modems, and wide area networks. For example, anybody on the University of North Texas campus who has access to the Sytek Local Area Network or the campus-wide Ethernet can access the UNT's library computer system. Also, UNT has dialup modems. Through these modems anybody with a computer, a modem, and a telecommunication package, such as PROCOMM, can access the library computer from home. The wide area networks allow users free access to other universities' library systems around the world. Accessing these library systems are described in this document. Details of using various library systems are described in appendices. Also, another appendix has information on how to connect to the Internet from JANET. Yet another appendix gives a list of TELNET and TN3270 escape key sequences for various communications packages. Finally, the last appendix gives references to other useful documents and programs. Type QUIT. 2 ALEPH Location: Israel ALEPH (Automated Library Expandable Program - Hebrew university) is a distributed library catalog sytem in Israel. Seven universities are connected: Bar-Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University, Haifa University, Hebrew University, Technion, Tel Aviv University, and Weizmann Institute of Science. To access: 1. The other systems may be searched using the SET HOST command (not to be confused with the VMS command of the same name). To get a list of the networked hosts available for searching, enter the command SHO HOSTS. By entering the command SET HOST HHH (where HHH is a remote host name), you will enter the remote system and set your search default to a specific institution or group symbol. This is done by using the command SET XLIB command. To get a list of institutions or symbols on a remote host, enter the command SHO HOST HHH (where HHH is the remote host name). Once in the remote host, searching is performed just as if you were in your own system.
